News from our teachers

μƒˆμ†Œμ‹

Even with all the negative things 2020 has brought us- this year sure is going by quickly! September has been an extremely busy month for some of the Fluentella teachers. We are proud to say that we have started our first corporate English course for a group of Italian professionals from Milan. How blessed we are! We have also welcomed some new Korean students into the Fluentella family… 2020 has brought us new friendships, students, and fun online experiences learning about other cultures and new languages!
This month I baked a salted caramel birthday cake for a good friend of mine. It wasn’t a perfect cake but it was made with love! My mom also came to visit my house for the first time in six months since lockdown began in South Africa. She met my dog, Mika, for the first time and Mika was extremely spoilt, just like a grandchild should be. Spending time with friends and family has become so much more important to me this year. I hope you also cherish the time with your loved ones and make the most out of each day you get here on Earth!

September has been a hectic yet rewarding month. I started teaching a few new classes here at Fluentella, including a group lesson. I’m having so much fun teaching these new students, and look forward to our new lessons each week. In other news, my neighbor started selling drumstick, also called moringa, one of my favorite vegetables and not readily available in the US. The drumstick is a long stalk-like vegetable that you need to sufficiently boil to eat, it is often used in South India for sambar or simply boiled and seasoned in a stirfry. I eat moringa regularly but still haven’t gotten tired of the taste.

September has been a beautiful month in Bali, although it has come with some challenging decisions! Trying to decide on flying home or staying in paradise during these troubled times is proving a difficult question.Β Aside from this, the beaches have been walked, the waves have been surfed and delicious traditional Indonesian food has been eaten.Β The lack of tourism means the streets are quieter and I get to see a more β€˜Real Bali’ you could say. Let’s see what October brings!

Wooowww September already? It’s almost Christmas, which means it is almost summertime in Brazil. This year has flown by too fast, I can’t remember the laytime I felt like this. September 7th was Brazilian Independence Day, even though we are not a patriotic nation, my girlfriend and I decided to walk around Paulista Avenue, the busiest street in SΓ£o Paulo, and for our surprise, it was packed with people waving the Brazilian Flag, National Anthem being played, I never felt this communal feeling before. It was nice for a change. Also, it’s warming up in Brazil, I don’t know how I’m gonna survive this year, without being able to go to the beaches #NoTan2020. Hope everyone is safe, washing their hands and wearing their masks.

What a challenging month this has been. On a personal level as well as on a work level. Too much to do and not enough time has been my predicament. I am slowly getting ready for a very hot summer. This obviously includes some form of eating plan (because what would summer be without the imaginary six-pack that I try to achieve every year). I have also been observing my mother and her passion for things that grow. She has a flower garden and a vegetable garden blooming in our yard, needless to say, this is where the majority of my salad ingredients have been funded. This is a blessing as I have become the queen of “Frugal town”. Which reminds me, spend the next couple of weeks being money savvy because December is right around the corner (the month when everyone feels that you owe them a present when it’s not even their birthday). Till next time, Love and light.

What’s happening in October?Β

10μ›”μ˜ μƒˆ μ†Œμ‹

October 4th is World Animal Day!

10μ›” 4일은 세계 λ™λ¬Όμ˜ λ‚ μž…λ‹ˆλ‹€!

From the tiniest bug to the majestic elephant – all life forms play an important role in the ecological balance of the earth. Whether you are a cat or a dog person, one cannot deny the fact that animals form an integral part of our lives. Imagine a world without bees and the effect that will have on an ecosystem. It could mean that we lose all the plants that bees pollinate. In turn, we may lose all the animals that eat those plants and this will continue up the food chain. It’s important to remember that we are just as dependent on animals as they are on us. Some animals depend on us for food and others may depend on us to protect them or their environment. Many people’s lives have been irreversibly changed and enriched by animals! Just take for example how many people rely on their pet for companionship and how guide dogs can assist a visually impaired person. Did you know that some animals have β€˜superpowers’? Some snakes have infrared heat detectors that can detect infrared radiation from warm bodies up to 1 meter away. And dolphins communicate with ultrasound by sending out high-frequency waves that echo to determine what type of object the sound beam hit! What a wonderful planet we live on!

World Animal Day is celebrated to help educate humans about how their actions impact animals and create awareness about the protection of animals all over the world. So let’s do our part!

Food plays such an important role in our lives. We all have to eat! Some of us really enjoy the act of eating itself while others have a passion for cooking. The point is, food is involved in each of our daily lives! We all know that food is an essential source of nutrients that our body needs in order to perform daily activities and help us stay strong and healthy. Sometimes we forget what an important part food plays in our social lives. Around the world students and colleagues have lunch together daily and families gather around dinner tables. Food brings people together. When we sit around a table with friends or family we not only share our food, but we also share our experiences, concerns, and achievements with the people we care about.

World Food Day is not only about celebrating the amazing food we can share together, but also about raising awareness for the people who don’t have such privilege. Starvation is an enormous problem in some countries and there are people from all over the world suffering from hunger. World Food Day gives us an opportunity to share with others in need and contribute to a good cause! Remember, food is an occasion for sharing!
How to celebrate #worldfoodday : Invite your family or friends over for a delicious meal. Sit around a table together and share your experiences, thoughts concerns, and achievements with each other. Donate your leftover food to someone in need. Volunteer at your local food bank and assist with handing out food parcels. September is Black Cat Awareness Month and also Halloween!

9월은 검은 고양이 μΈμ‹μ˜ λ‹¬μ΄μž ν• λ‘œμœˆμž…λ‹ˆλ‹€!

It’s that time of the year again! Many people around the world celebrate Halloween in October and there is no better time to raise awareness for black cats. These beautiful creatures have always been associated with Halloween and superstitious beliefs. In some cultures, black cats are linked to bad luck, but in others, black cats are actually a sign of positive things to come! Unfortunately, the myth about them bringing bad luck is the one that has grown most popular over the years. This is also the reason black cats get left behind in shelters more often than others. Black Cat Awareness month is celebrated to raise awareness about how great black cats are and to dismiss the myth about them bringing bad luck. In Scotland for example, if a black cat appears on your doorstep it is seen as a sign of prosperity and in some parts of France, feeding and treating a black cat with care is believed to bring good luck to the owner. Black cats are also a symbol of good luck in other countries too, like Japan, and in some parts of England, people believe a black cat walking in front of you will take all your troubles away. So next time you come across a black cat don’t just dismiss it as a sign of bad luck but appreciate it for the beautiful animal it is. Happy Halloween!

How you can help: Raise awareness by sharing some photos and good luck stories about black cats with your friends and family. Do some arts and crafts at home with a black cat theme. Bake some cookies in the form of a cat and share it with your friends and family. Remember to teach your children that all animals are special and that myths are just myths- not the truth!
