Sesame Street is one of the most widely viewed kids’ shows in the world! Though initially meant to simply be fun and educational, the show has evolved into an international cultural phenomenon. Sesame Street Day was first established in 2009 to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the show’s original broadcast. While initiated in New York City, it should come as no great surprise that this occasion is now recognized by tens of thousands of individuals from all over the planet. It’s an educational series that combines live actors with animation as well as special puppets by Jim Henson, known as “Muppets”. Many of the recurring characters have remained with the show for many years, particularly Kermit the Frog, friends Ernie and Bert, Big Bird and Cookie Monster. Elmo came into the scene in the mid-80s and many more characters have joined since then as well. The show seeks to create educational opportunities for children of all ages by fostering learning, engaging their minds, building social skills, promoting self-esteem and offering basic academic skills.

Activities: Grab your friends and have a Sesame Street karaoke party! Revisit some of the favorite hits like; “Rubber Duckie” and “C is for Cookie”. Our unique talents are some of the things that make us who we are, and in many cases define our personalities and our outlook on life. This unofficial holiday of unknown origins encourages people to wholeheartedly accept their special talent and showcase it to the world. Think about what you’re best at and show it off as much as you can on this day!

Activities: Find your unique talent, and share it with the world! You can record yourself doing your particular talent and showcase it in a YouTube video or just share it with friends and family who perhaps have never seen this talent in action. If it’s the kind of talent that can be shared, such as physical art, use it to create gifts for friends and coworkers.
