The winter is officially here in Cape Town, South Africa. It makes getting out of bed in the mornings a little bit harder, but knowing that I’ll see my amazing students get me going each day. As the days are getting shorter and colder, it is also the perfect time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves. Here in South Africa, we celebrate a special day on July 18th, called Nelson Mandela Day. Each year on 18 July, millions of South Africans are called on to spend 67 minutes working for the good of others. The duration symbolizes the 67 years that the late Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice. I will be doing this as well, just like millions of people around the world, not only in South Africa.
Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. You can add to the momentum of the initiative by telling as many people as possible about it.
Here are some other, simple things you can do to make the world a better place:
– Put together stationery packs (pens, stickers, colored paper, scissors, etc.) for teachers at an under-resourced school.
– Do a neighborhood clean-up armed with plastic gloves and black bags.
– Donate your used clothes instead of throwing them away.
– Volunteer your time at a Night Shelter or Soup Kitchen.
– Make โcare kitsโ (including a comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth, etc. ) for patients at a nearby government hospital.
– Donate blood.
– Remove graffiti.
– Teach someone elderly how to use a computer and the Internet.
For more ideas, visit https://www.mandeladay.com/pages/what-can-i-do
I will be spending time and donating some essential goods to an orphanage in my area on July 18th. I hope that other members of the Fluentella Family will also be inspired by the legendary Nelson Mandela to transform the world little by little.

I always say how busy my month has been, but that is the only explanation I have for the time passing by so quickly. Is it really the end of June already? I hope everyone is having a jampacked month as I am. We don’t get a lot of sunshine here in Washington, so any chance I get I try to spend outside soaking up my vitamin D. Now that the days are longer I have been running earlier and earlier, it is a nice change of pace to run with the sun instead of in the dark all the time! I have thought of signing up for a race next year, but still not quite sure.

Brrr…Winter is in full swing here in South Africa. The heater and blankets are out. The plus side is that I’ve been cooking and enjoying warm, delicious, comforting soups and stews. I always look forward to this part of winter! This month I’ve been taking in as much as possible of my home city (Cape Town)! I’ve visited my favorite people, enjoyed my favorite views, and probably had one too many barbeques! As I mentioned last month I’ve had important things to think about and decisions have been made! Big changes will be happening soon, but I’ll tell you all about this next month!
It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through 2021 already! Hope you all had a fantastic June!

In China, June is the beginning of summer. One weekend we went to a Cherry Orchard and picked a lot of cherries. Because we can eat and pick at the same time, we had a wonderful day. I shared them with my good friends. After the bicycle lane of East-West Binhe Road in Taiyuan was opened, I took my mother to ride there every week. The right side of the lane is full of roses, and the river breeze blows the fragrance of roses to the people enjoying nature. Along the way, there are not only some basketball courts and football fields but also two open-air swimming pools. On the road itself, there are a lot of bike teams with cool equipment, and there are also parents who ride with their children. For some reason, my Dad went to another city, so I couldn’t celebrate Fatherโs Day with him. I want to say to him, ‘Dad, I miss you, Happy Father’s day!’

This month has been full of wonderful feelings because we are going to be parents! We are really happy because it is the best thing we have experienced in our lives so far. June is the coldest month in Brazil, which means anything below 25 degrees Celsius. We have something called โFesta Juninaโ or June Party, where people dress up like cowboys, make bonfires, and eat festive foods that you can only enjoy during this time of the year. These include โquentรฃoโ, which is hot wine with herbs. Schools perform cultural dances and people really look forward to it. My parents and I spent a day cooking and eating and it was nice to have some family time.
This month I also got to celebrate my little brotherโs birthday. I canโt believe he turned 25, not so long ago I was holding him in my arms and teaching him how to kick a soccer ball. Now he is a grown man just like me.

What really happens to the plastic you throw away – Emma Bryce, TED-Ed
Weโve all been told that we should recycle plastic bottles and containers. But what actually happens to the plastic if we just throw it away? Emma Bryce traces the life cycles of three different plastic bottles, shedding light on the dangers these disposables present to our world. Lesson by Emma Bryce, animation by Sharon Colman.

Stop trying to be perfect! You are going to make many, many mistakes on your journey to fluency. When beginning to learn a new language, don’t memorize as many words as possible. Forget saying each sentence perfectly. Language and fluency cannot be learned from a textbook alone. July 21st is Hot Dog Day! 7์ 21์ผ์ ํซ๋๊ทธ์ ๋ ์ ๋๋ค!
National (in the United States of America) Hot Dog Day varies from year to year. It’s usually the third Wednesday of July โ based on when the North American Meat Institute hosts its annual Hot Dog Lunch on Capitol Hill. Did you know? Over 25 Million are sold annually at baseball stadiums and 7-11 sells the most grilled hot dogs every year with over 100 million!
Itโs safe to say most of us have had a hot dog in one form or another. Hot Dog Day celebrates this very famous, delicious, comforting treat!
It is said that the Frankfurter was named after the German city of Frankfurt, where it was believed to originate from. Hot dogs are so versatile. We can have them in a variety of ways. Theyโre portable and super easy to make. Many of us enjoy grilling them over a fire, but they can most definitely also be boiled or pan-fried. And of course, the list of toppings is ever-growing, from the basic ketchup or mustard to yummy bacon, chili, and sauerkraut.
Many of us have fond memories of the hot dog. For some of us, it reminds us of the fairs or festivals we visited as a kid, that exciting sports day when we supported our favorite team, or the fun barbeque in the backyard with friends and family.
Itโs the perfect day to spoil yourself with your favorite frankfurter, wiener, footlong, or whatever you like to call them!

Parentsโ Day is celebrated on July 25th in the USA ์ด๋ฒ์ด๋ ์ ๋ฏธ๊ตญ์์ 7์ 25์ผ์ ๊ธฐ๋ ๋๋ต๋๋ค!
Parentsโ Day is an opportunity to show appreciation for all the love, time, and effort moms and dads have poured into our upbringing. It doesnโt matter whether it’s blood relatives or someone who you consider to be a parent because of the role they played in your life!
This day is celebrated to recognize the importance of these people who have guided and supported us to reach our goals and become the people we are today.
Parents play a vital role in the lives of children. From birth, parents protect, teach, provide and serve as role models. We grow up to mirror their behavior and learn how to be a core part of our communities.
As many of us know, these efforts can be very challenging, so letโs take this day and celebrate these special people in our lives!
Activities: Spend some quality time with your parents, whether itโs having dinner or watching their favorite show with them! Give them a thoughtful gift or card to show your appreciation. Help your mom or dad in or around the house, whether itโs doing the laundry or washing their car!

July is Plastic Free Month! 7์์ ํ๋ผ์คํฑ ์๋ ๋ฌ์ด์์!
While this year has been a challenging year for all of us dealing with the effects of Covid-19, it is also a great time to reflect on our actions and their effects on the environment.
Plastic has become the most used product people use daily despite how damaging it is to the environment. Recycling is emphasized everywhere and itโs incredibly important to enforce the idea of how easy it is to recycle.
Plastic Free July is all about encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use and creating a cleaner world as a result. Itโs a global movement to empower individuals, communities, and businesses to refuse single-use plastic in their lives. This day also helps educate people about the different types of plastic and what happens in the recycling system when plastic is produced.
If we all make a small change, we can collectively make a massive difference around the world! Letโs do our part!
Activities: Avoid single-use plastic, such as straws, water bottles, and plastic produce bags. Use more reusable products, such as glass jars, metal utensils, and metal tin lunch boxes and storage containers. Learn how to make you own products like toothpaste and deodorant to avoid unnecessary plastic. Share your tips and tricks for being plastic-free on social media and encourage your friends to join in!
